    Steel Wire Rope Knowledge:

    1. wire rope definition

    Wire rope is a type of cable which consists of several strands of steel wire laid into a helix.

    Wire ropes are used dynamically for lifting and hoisting in cranes and elevators, and for transmission of mechanical power. Wire rope is also used to transmit force in mechanisms, such as a Bowden cable or the control surfaces of an airplane connected to levers and pedals in the cockpit. Static wire ropes are used to support structures such as suspension bridges or as guy wires to support towers. An aerial tramway relies on wire rope to support and move cargo overhead.

    2. Wire rope construction

    a. Wires: steel wires for wire ropes are normally made of non-alloy carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.4 to 0.95%. The tensile forces and to run over sheaves with relatively small diameters.

    b. Strand: the strand is a component of wire rope usually consisting of an assembly of wires of appropriate diamsions laid helically in one or more layers around a central element.

    c. Core: the core is the central element, of fiber or steel, around which are laid helically the outer strands of wire rope. The core provides proper support for the strands under normal bending and loading conditions.

    3. Lays of wire rope

    The lays of wire ropes, with few exceptions, are roughly divided into two kinds-Lang's Lay and Regular Lay.

    The Lang's Lay rope offers a better wearing surface when in use and can be expected to serve for a longer priod than the Regular rope, which, meanwhile, is more flexible than Lang's Lay rope and easily spliced.

    4. How to measure rope size

    The size of a wire rope is the diameter of the circle which will just enclose all of the strands, The correct method is to measure over any pair of opposite strands.

    5. Cores for wire ropes

    a. Steel

    IWRC (Independent Wire Rope Core) the main core is an independent wire rope, normally having the construction 7x7.

    IWRC (Independent Wire Rope Core) the main core is an independent wire strand, normally having the same construction as the outer strands of the rope.

    b. Fiber

    Fiber cores are stranded and comprise either:

    Natural fibres such as sisal, help, jute, and cotton.

    Synthetic fibres such as polyamide, polyethylene, and polypropylene.

    Asbestos fibres (heat resistant)

    6. Preformed ropes

    In the preforming process the wires and strands are given their final helical pitch before being laid up into rope.

    Ropes made in this way show no tendency to untwist when cut.

    7. Lubrication

    Lubrication reduces internal friction of the wires and strands and protects against corrosion.

    Grease is applied to all ropes.

    If special lubricants are required this must be specifically stated at time of ordering.

    8. Classification of ropes according to usage

    a. Running ropes (stranded ropes) are bent over sheaves and drums. They are therefore stressed mainly by bending and secondly by tension.

    b. Stationary ropes, stay ropes (spiral ropes, mostly full-locked) have to carry tensile forces and are therefore mainly loaded by static and fluctuating tensile stresses. Ropes used for suspension are often called cables.

    c. track ropes (full locked ropes) have to act as rails for the rollers of cabins or other loads in aerial ropeways and cable cranes.

    d. Wire rope slings (stranded ropes) are used to harness various kinds of goods. These slings are stressed by the tensile forces but first of all by bending stresses when bent over the more or less sharp edges of the goods.

    9. How to select wire ropes

    In the working life of a wire rope are involved a lot of factors. In order to make the best selection, it should be considered the following:

    a. adequate load capacity

    b. fatigue resistance

    c. abrasion resistance

    d. corrosion resistance

    e. crushing resistance

    10. Steel wire rope periodic inspection

    Regular inspections will help to determinate when a wire rope must be replaced.

    Inspection frequency in the wire rope will be established according to environment conditions, specific use, frequency of use, and so on.

    The most common characters to verify in a wire rope are shown in the next table.
